"A house is a home when it shelters the body and comforts the soul."
Phillip Moffitt

How to begin:

To commission a house portrait, Joyce will require photographs and a 50% refundable deposit. Your satisfaction is guaranteed. If you're not delighted, your money will be cheerfully returned.

Photos:

Joyce prefers to have several photos of the home to paint from. (All will be returned with your home portrait.)

To make sure she sees your home at its most charming, please provide photos from all three angles: straight ahead, and from a 3/4 angle on each side, showing both the front and one side. Tip: Try taking photos early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when shadows are most dramatic.

The more detail they show, the better the finished painting. If possible, include close-ups of brick walks, lamp posts or any other unique features to give your home portrait the special quality it deserves.

Some homes look their best in spring, others in autumn. If you have good photos of your home but they're "out of season", you can discuss with Joyce the colors and plantings you'd like included.

"Some people like to have their homes painted in "Christmas Card" style," says Joyce. "I can add snowmen, candles in windows, wreaths on doors -- I can even make it snow! Just be sure to provide me with enough reference photos.

"Some clients like to add special things to their home portrait. Sometimes it's a family pet that has passed on. If you can provide a photo of your beloved animal companion, I can add them in a window, on a porch or in the driveway."

Note: These are authentic paintings. Many so-called "house portraits" are simply retouched photographs scanned into a computer. Joyce's home portraits are individually hand-painted on canvas -- the same way it's been done since the days of Cezanne and Monet.

Personal Consultation

Before she begins work, Joyce consults closely with you about the details of your home, its history, your family, as well as the look, feeling or emotion you want portrayed. After you agree on a price and delivery date, she begins her pencil sketches. When complete, they are sent to you via email or fax. Upon approval, the painting begins.

"A stretched canvas is prepared and the painting begins," Joyce explains. "It's fun to see the house come to life on canvas. I'm careful to capture the true colors of the house, if that's what the client wants. But with color blending, the use of shadows and dappled sunlight, the finished painting takes on a painterly and sensitive feeling that is pretty romantic. As the painting progresses, it magically changes from being a house into a home. It can take up to 60 days to complete a large portrait. Your photos are referred to many times during the painting process, so it's very important to provide enough detail shots and notes."

100% Satisfaction

When the painting is nearly finished, it is professionally photographed and a print is emailed (or mailed) for final approval by the client. Joyce always strives to ensure that each painting is exactly what the client has in mind to provide 100% satisfaction.

If you're not delighted for any reason, your deposit will be cheerfully refunded. The balance of the price is due upon delivery. Upon completion, the painting is either picked up or shipped, depending upon distance.
